The history of tear bears as I know it!
Over the last 6 yrs that I have been making tear bears, they have developed
and morphed and continue to do so as I continue to try new ways of making them
I have sold many 12" x 12" double scrapbook pages with tear bears on them.
They are wonderful to decorate scrapbook pages for babies, young children, weddings, birthday's, any kind of celebration.
Young and old love having tear bears in thier scrapbooks.
I can't really tell you the complete history of them, but I do know they originated on ebay
One lady had some thick mulberry paper, which is made in Tailand.
She discovered that if you worked the paper a certain way, you could make it feel and look like fur
So then another lady got excited about that and started her own experiments.
Eventually they both came up with what we call, "tear bears" today
They really are a little art all thier own.
You rarely see clases on how to make tear bears, in the craft stores
The mulberry paper can only be ordered on line
In the beginning if you wanted to make a tear bear, you had to come up with your own pattern for the head, body, arms, legs, eyes, nose, ears ect.
it was quite an accomplishment to be able to create your own tear bear and then to sell it and make money doing so!
Now there are lots of tear bear patterns for sale. But still very few classes for them across the country.
A good tear bear, completed and up for sale can command a pretty good price.
I have seen them sell many times for over $100.00
And I have seen many not sell at all
The secret is getting them to almost look like people, but still look like a bear!
There is a little tear bear community on ebay where every tear bear artist knows the other tear bear artists.
yes they do compete against each other for the highest price and most recognition
The bears also tend to get trendy. If one artist is makig money selling them with fabric dresses on, the other artists are sure to follow and make thier bears with fabric dresses.
To me the trick of making your bear original is to think how would one of my customers like to use this bear on thier scrapbook pages
That is something I have stuck to for years, it seems to bring me good customers.
So who knows where the tear bear art will go, or how far?
it's an interesting hobby and art, one that changes all the time.
Someday I am going to make tear bears for myself and my own scrapbook pages
Well atleast I would like to think that would happen! :0) Thank you for stopping by my blog. I hope you have learned a little bit about the tear bear industry. I put bears up each week for auction. Make sure you check them out! Cindy(ebay id: jarpainting)
